Why is Car Insurance Mandatory?

There are some people who every time that they have to pay their car insurance grumble about it and can’t understand why it is mandatory. The reason is obviously that the cost of an accident is very high and it is important to make sure that you can pay for it. One of the reasons for all the grumbling is that a lot of people don’t seem to understand just who auto insurance is supposed to cover.

The reason that car insurance is mandatory is to protect other people in the event that you cause an accident. Despite what some people may think mandatory car insurance is not to protect you, it is to make sure that you can pay for the damage that you do if you cause an accident. There is a good chance that if you are the cause of an accident somebody could be badly hurt and need a lifetime of medical care. Car insurance is supposed to make sure that you are able to pay for this if you are the cause of the accident.

In most cases when an uninsured motorist causes an accident the government has to end up paying for at least part of the damage that they have done. Clearly this is not fair to the tax payers so there is a lot of pressure on the government to reduce the amount that they have to pay for this. As a result mandatory insurance laws are getting tougher and tougher and the enforcement is being stepped up. With all of the financial problems that they government has the last thing that it want is to have to pay the bills that are supposed to be covered by car insurance.

Because of the need to ensure that drivers have car insurance the government has had to introduce ever stricter laws to make sure that drivers comply. Despite this there are still plenty of people who try to get away with driving with no insurance. This is really a pretty stupid risk given the huge risks that are involved. If you were to cause an accident you would still be responsible for the cost of the damage which for most people without insurance would financially ruin them.

Even if you don’t cause an accident driving without car insurance remains a silly risk. The cost of the fines for getting caught are now high enough that they are more than you would have to pay for car insurance. Given the increased efforts at enforcement the chances that you would be able to get away with driving with no insurance for any length of time are quite low. Since it is such a silly risk it is not worth taking. If you shop around you should be able to find coverage at a very reasonable cost so there are really no excuses.
